In the Shallows

Sauci Churchill

1.
We follow a spit of land
sunshine catches in our hair
it’s brushed away like a veil
2.
The Dream: In a fishing village
a clock radio with a small
rectangular panel is pried
open with my fingernail
I duck my head and enter a room
filled with books and tangerine marigolds
A window looks out to snow
I could be happy here but a voice says
Where will you put all of this?
3.
Blue is the dominant color of the Moorish nomad
whose art is patched cloth, more valuable than new
Possessions are what they can carry
4.
On the metro a man with a wine birthmark
on half his face turns to me
one eye out of darkness is the bluest of all
5.
There were things my mother hated
green-eyed cats that rubbed against you
and you didn’t know what they were thinking
A Simmenthal cow they got rid of when it didn’t breed
She told me I was scared of knives
Whenever she stands behind me now
she says “I have a knife don’t be afraid.”
6.
The Buckle: What my father fixed
what he set his hand to
cannot be undone.
7.
Green vines were my ally: they held you
I said to no one or to God
I love this man
Wildflowers, bluebells
to see their center breaks your heart
8.
I lash out forgetting you are gone
My legs scissor out
meeting no opposition
Without that curved shoreline
I have lost all boundaries
